PITMAN, NJ (October 10, 2001) - K-Tron feeders with SmartConnex controls put motor drive and control functions into a Smart Control Module (SCM) that can be field mounted right on each feeder.

The SCM is the feeder's "brain" and knows how to control all types of gravimetric feeders in both batch and continuous processes.

An infrared data link lets users perform configuration or diagnostics with a notebook computer without connecting cables to the SCM. When the feeder is moved, configuration knowledge remains with the machine, reducing reconfiguration time. Connection to the plant's PLC or other host system can take place directly from the SCM or from the operator interface.

For multi-feeder applications, SmartConnex forms a network of "Thinking Feeders" via a high-speed standardized bus system, connecting feeder, operator interface and smart I/O. By more tightly integrating the basic components of the feeder system, the SCM reduces the cost of installation and daily operation and makes feeders easier to use and maintain.
